PGT Windows & Doors: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide
If you own PGT windows or doors in Long Beach, a failed seal, worn roller, or cracked glass doesn’t mean the whole unit is shot. We stock and install PGT-compatible replacement parts, and a typical part replacement runs between $150 and $850 installed depending on what’s failed. We can usually diagnose the problem over the phone with a few measurements and have the part ordered within days, not weeks.

Most Long Beach homeowners discover a failed PGT part in one of three ways: a window that suddenly won’t stay up, a sliding door that grinds across the track, or condensation fogging between the glass panes. These are the product’s safety and performance features wearing down over time, often accelerated by our coastal salt air. The good news is that PGT built these windows and doors to be serviced, not thrown away.
Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT makes several window and door lines, and parts are not universal across all of them. The main series we service in Long Beach homes include the WinGuard impact line (the big aluminum and vinyl frames rated for coastal storm protection), the SpectraGuard line, and the ClassicVue and Eze-Breeze porch enclosure systems. Each series uses different roller assemblies, balance systems, and weatherstripping profiles.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: PGT changed their balance shoe and pivot bar design in the mid-2010s on certain double-hung models. A pre-2014 WinGuard 7300 double-hung uses a different balance shoe than a 2016 version, even though the window looks identical from the outside. The surest way to identify your part is to look for a small white or silver sticker on the inside of the frame near the lock, or etched glass marking in a corner of the pane. That sticker has the series code and manufacturing date. If it’s faded or painted over, we can match the part by measuring the frame thickness and the balance shoe width.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: PGT OEM parts carry the manufacturer’s spec, but on common wear items like rollers and weatherstripping, we use aftermarket equivalents from suppliers we’ve vetted against the original dimensions. For anything structural like impact glass or reinforced corner keys, we use PGT OEM parts only. The coastal rating isn’t something we’re willing to gamble on.

Signs Your PGT Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Fog or condensation between the glass panes. The insulated glass unit seal has failed. Once the seal breaks, the argon or krypton gas escapes and there’s no way to restore the original thermal performance. The fix is a new IGU, not a repair.
- The window is hard to lift or won’t stay up. On double-hung windows, the balance spring has either fatigued or broken. One side of the window will usually drop lower than the other when this happens.
- The sliding door jumps the track or makes a grinding noise. The roller wheels are worn flat on one side. In Long Beach, we see this often on doors facing west, where afternoon sun hardens the nylon rollers faster.
- A draft you can feel around the window frame or door edge even when closed. The weatherstripping has compressed or torn. On PGT casement windows, the culprit is usually the bulb seal along the hinge side.
- You hear a snap and the window drops instantly. A balance cord or spring broke under tension. Stop using the window until it’s serviced, especially if it’s a larger unit that could catch fingers or damage the frame on the way down.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote for PGT part replacements in Long Beach. These are installed prices, not just parts we hand you across a counter.
- Roller replacement for a sliding door: $150 – $350, depending on whether it’s a two-roller or four-roller door
- Balance spring or balance shoe replacement: $200 – $400 per window sash
- Weatherstripping replacement: $150 – $400 per window or door, depending on the profile
- Insulated glass unit (IGU) replacement: $400 – $850 per sash, sized to the exact opening
Every quote from Elmstead Remodeling Long Beach comes as a written price before any work starts. That price includes the part, the labor to remove and reinstall the sash or panel, clean-up, and a photo of the finished work before the crew leaves. If you have multiple windows or doors with the same failing part, we’ll price them as a package rather than individual line items.
The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to PGT part replacements just like our larger remodeling projects. If the replacement fails within a year, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Some PGT part swaps are genuinely simple. A clip-in weatherstripping replacement on a WinGuard casement window takes ten minutes and no special tools. If you can identify the exact part, PGT sells direct to homeowners. If you replace the wrong part, you’re out a few hundred dollars and still have a failing window.
Here’s where we’re more cautious. Balance springs on double-hung windows are under real tension. When they let go, they can snap with force and catch fingers. Impact-rated glass is heavy. Hauling a new IGU up a ladder and seating it without scratching the frame or breaking the seal is not a weekend project. We tell Long Beach homeowners the same thing we tell each other: silicone and caulk are forgiving, springs and glass are not.

FAQs

A properly installed PGT window or door in Long Beach should last 20 to 25 years before major components need replacing. What wears out sooner are the serviceable parts: rollers and weatherstripping typically last 5 to 10 years in our climate, less if the unit faces direct afternoon sun or sits within a block of saltwater exposure. The frame itself, especially the WinGuard aluminum line, will outlast most of the house around it. Call (562) 512-7086 and we’ll help you figure out what stage your units are in.
Some parts like rollers and balance shoes are replaced, not repaired, because the nylon and spring steel in them can’t be reshaped once they’ve worn out. Weatherstripping is always a replace item. A fogged IGU isn’t repairable either because the seal between the panes has broken and the inert gas is gone. If you’re not sure whether your part is repairable, call (562) 512-7086 with a photo and we’ll tell you straight.
A roller or weatherstripping swap usually takes under an hour per window or door. A full IGU replacement takes longer because the glass has to be ordered to size and shipped, usually 1 to 2 weeks in Long Beach. The actual install for an IGU is a half-day job. Call (562) 512-7086 and we’ll give you a written estimate that includes the timeline before we order anything.
We keep common PGT roller assemblies, balance shoes, and weatherstripping profiles stocked for the most common Long Beach models. Specialty parts like impact-rated IGUs and custom-sized balance springs are ordered direct from PGT or our vetted suppliers once we confirm the exact dimensions. For parts we also use on remodel projects, we source from KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone when the application calls for those brands. Call (562) 512-7086 and we’ll check our stock while you’re on the phone.
