Quikrete Kitchen Remodeling: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

If you’re searching for Quikrete kitchen remodeling in Long Beach, you’re likely holding a bag of Quikrete countertop mix, a box of Quikrete mortar, or staring at a substrate that didn’t cure the way the bag promised. We install and repair Quikrete-based kitchen surfaces throughout Long Beach, and a full Quikrete kitchen remodel here typically runs between $14,000 and $45,000 installed. The most common way homeowners find us: a concrete countertop or mortar bed that cracked, spalled, or never bonded correctly in the first place, often because the mix was applied over the wrong substrate for our coastal humidity.

We’re Elmstead Remodeling Long Beach, a Cedarwell company. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with Quikrete, but we work with their products on kitchen jobs across Long Beach every month, from Belmont Shore to Bixby Knolls. What we’ve learned about how Quikrete behaves in a kitchen environment isn’t on the back of the bag. The bag tells you how to mix it. It doesn’t tell you what happens when it meets cooking grease, salt air, and a house that settles two inches over forty years.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

Quikrete makes several product lines that show up in Long Beach kitchens, and they fail differently. The big three we see: Quikrete Countertop Mix (the 80-lb bags people use for poured concrete counters), Quikrete Sand/Topping Mix (used as a thinner cap layer, often over plywood), and Quikrete Thin-Set or Mortar Mix (used under tile backsplashes and floor tile). If you have a poured Quikrete countertop, your failure is usually structural: a crack that started at the sink cutout or a corner that spalled. If you have Quikrete mortar under tile, the failure is usually bond-related: tiles popping loose because the mix was applied too dry or over a substrate that flexed.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see all the time in Long Beach: Quikrete Countertop Mix has no polymer reinforcement out of the bag. On a kitchen island that spans six feet with a sink in the middle, that’s a problem in a coastal climate where humidity cycles daily. The mix shrinks as it cures, and without steel mesh or fiber reinforcement added on site, it cracks around the sink cutout within two to three years. We add welded wire mesh and a polymer admixture on every Quikrete countertop pour. The bag doesn’t call for either one. That’s the difference between a counter that lasts five years and one that lasts twenty.

For identification: if you still have the original bag or receipt, the product number is printed on the front. Quikrete Countertop Mix is number 1106-80. Sand/Topping Mix is 1103. If you don’t have the bag, the texture tells you a lot: Countertop Mix has larger aggregate and a rougher finish; Sand/Topping Mix is finer and was likely used for a thinner cap. When you call us, any of that information helps us match the right product before we arrive.

Signs Your Quikrete Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Cracks around the sink or cooktop cutout. This is the most common Quikrete countertop failure in Long Beach. It’s caused by shrinkage during curing combined with the structural weak point of the cutout. The crack starts hairline and widens as the house moves through seasonal humidity changes. Once it reaches the edge, water gets under the surface and everything accelerates.
  • Spalling or flaking on the surface. Concrete that wasn’t sealed, or was sealed with the wrong product, absorbs water, cooking oil, and citrus. The surface layer starts popping off in small flakes. We see this on Quikrete counters that were sealed with a basic penetrating sealer instead of a food-safe film-forming epoxy or polyurethane.
  • Tile popping loose from a Quikrete mortar bed. If you’re finding loose backsplash tiles or floor tiles that rock when you step on them, the mortar likely wasn’t mixed wet enough, or the substrate behind it flexed. In Long Beach’s humidity, dry-mixed mortar that cured too fast never achieves full bond strength.
  • Discoloration or dark blotches that won’t dry. Quikrete is cement-based, and cement holds moisture. If the counter or mortar bed wasn’t given proper cure time before being sealed or tiled over, moisture gets trapped. The result is permanent gray or brown blotching under the surface. It won’t dry out because it can’t; it’s sealed in.
  • A hollow sound when you tap the surface. Tap a coin across your Quikrete countertop or tiled floor. If you hear a hollow thud instead of a solid click, the mix has debonded from the substrate beneath. The surface might look fine today, but it’s no longer supported and will fail under a hot pan or a heavy pot.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

New painted shaker cabinets with an organized deep drawer

In Long Beach, a full Quikrete-based kitchen remodel runs $14,000 to $45,000. That range covers everything from a modest galley kitchen in a Naples Island condo to a full gut-and-rebuild in a Park Estates home with an island and custom poured counters. If your scope is narrower, here’s how the sub-ranges break down:

  • Kitchen remodel (full): $14,000 – $45,000
  • Countertop installation (Quikrete poured, per kitchen): $2,000 – $6,500
  • Backsplash installation: $800 – $2,500
  • Cabinet installation: $4,000 – $13,000
  • Kitchen island installation: $3,000 – $10,000

What drives the price within that range is real and predictable: the condition of the substrate under the Quikrete, whether we need to remove and dispose of failed concrete or tile first, whether the cabinets underneath are staying or going, and what level of finish you want on the surface. A polished concrete counter takes hours more than a simple sealed finish. A tiled backsplash over properly prepared Quikrete mortar is faster than one where we’re removing old tile and repairing the wall behind it.

Every estimate from Elmstead Remodeling Long Beach includes a written price before any work starts. The number we write down covers parts, labor, materials, and the clean-up. Graham Stein, our owner, has a rule he repeats on every job: “The price I write down on day one is the price on the invoice when we’re done.” We don’t do change orders because we didn’t look at something carefully enough. We look carefully the first time.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things a homeowner can safely check on a Quikrete kitchen surface, and things that genuinely need a contractor who has mixed and poured this product in Long Beach conditions. You can safely inspect for cracks, test for hollow spots, and check whether your sealer is still beading water. You can clean the surface and keep oils off it while you decide what to do next.

What we’d caution against is attempting a structural repair, especially anything involving removing a cracked section of countertop around a sink cutout. Concrete counters are heavy, the edges are sharp when broken, and a partial pour that bonds to old concrete is not a beginner project. If the failure involves a mortar bed under tile, the danger is less dramatic but the frustration is real: removing tile without damaging the substrate behind it, then re-tiling over properly cured mortar, takes practice. If you’re not sure whether your Quikrete surface needs a repair or a replacement, call us at (562) 512-7086. We’ll look at photos, tell you what we’re seeing, and give you a straight answer before anyone schedules a visit.
